How to Change a Lawn Mower Oil Filter -- John Deere
www.lowes.com You will need: an oil filter wrench, an oil drain pan, a funnel, shop towels, oil and an oil filter. Check the operator's manual to determine what oil and oil filter you need. Start by running the engine for a minute or two. This warms the oil so it will drain easier. Park the mower on a level, solid surface. Place the drain pan under the engine's oil plug and start draining the oil. Be careful, as the oil could be very hot. The oil should be drained in a few minutes. Close the drain plug and move the oil drain pan under the oil filter. Turning counterclockwise, remove the filter. Use an oil filter wrench if the filter is too tight to loosen by hand. Drain the oil out of the filter and dispose of it properly. Use a clean shop towel to remove any dirt near the oil filter area. Also clean any spills of old oil. Then place a few drops of clean oil on the rubber gasket of the new oil filter. Spin the filter onto the engine. Don't overtighten. Turn the filter until you feel the gasket contact with the engine, then hand tighten the filter another half turn. Now add the new oil to the engine. Check the manual for the amount of oil needed for your engine. Before you check the oil level secure the dipstick and cap. Run the engine briefly to pump oil into the new filter. Check for any leaks.
